brief introduction on the concept. what is the problem we are trying to solve and why?
Northern nigeria is bedeviled with many socio-economic challenges. these challenges have lingered for a very long time in the region. although there were several efforts by governments, traditional, religious leaders and civil societies to address the situation but there is only little success recorded. the situation is increasingly degenerating, becoming worth by days and leads to emergence of more and more social vices in our society. unemployment among youth, out-of-school children, children roaming about the street, poverty, banditry, drug abuse, diseases, divorce, kidnapping, thuggery, rape, broken homes etc. we understand that all hands must be on deck to salvage ourselves from the menace of these vices. we therefore feel duty bound to contribute, advocate and proffer solutions in tackling these problems. we believe that only through provision of quality education to our young ones only then they will grow up to be responsible leaders of tomorrow and build a better society. girls’ education and women empowerment and access to employment and or business opportunities is the area we have chosen to contribute in. when woman is educated a whole nation is educated and an educated nation is a prosperous and promising nation.

format and mode of delivery of our educational program.
the mode of delivery of our educational program is face-to-face in classroom and workshop with an instructor. we provide learning space designed to be flexible, interactive and contributory where women/girls will feel free and courageous to say what they expect and show what their needs are. we have two categories of learners – widows/divorcees and young girls. empowerment programs are designed for the widows and divorcees to enhance their skills and improve their total well-being. these skills are both in the area of soft and technical; soft skills comprise of basic knowledge of business education, strategic planning, business and crisis management. whereas in the technical skill, everything will be hands-on knowledge and skills training. the areas are tailoring, baking/cooking and catering, hair dressing/makeup, shoe/bags making, beans cake/spicy and crunchy ‘kuli-kuli’ etc. for the young girls especially those that are about to marry, we are to give them a short time training and counseling on the new modern day realities in matrimonial homes and expectations of their spouses, in-laws and even their society. this will go a long way in reducing broken homes where children suffer the most and at the end society bear the consequences. they are to be trained in some hands-on-skills to boost their capacity to start their own businesses in their marital homes. this will greatly minimize their total dependence and becoming financial burden to their spouces.
beneficiaries: an overview of program beneficiaries. who will this project serve? how is this solution relevant to the target audience(s)?
there are two categories of the beneficiaries of our program as stated earlier:
Widows/Divorcees; women whose either husbands died or are divorced, majority of whom are left with many children with no one to help take care of. most of them cannot read or write neither do they have any skill they can use to make a leaving. the children under them are the victim of the unfortunate situation, they grow up in the society in utter distress, with no moral training, education and without parental love and care. not everybody will want to marry this category of women. they are regarded as huge burden herself and her children.
Young girls; a considerable number of our girls are not opportune to go to school. having come from poor parents who cannot afford the expenses and the wrong notion that girls child education is not important because at the end of it all she is going to be married. lack of infrastructures in our school that will take care of the peculiar needs of girls in schools. the young girls are again not engaged in skills learning activities so that when they grow up they can do something meaningful for their lives. our program will really help mitigate these challenges in the society by empowering women and girls through skills acquisition programs and counseling.
partners & resources: key inputs and relationships that is required to bring the project to life.
to realize our dream, weegci needs collaboration with relevant people, groups and institutions that will help us strategize, drive and deliver on this journey. collaboration and partnership will help us in many ways; it will help us find proper direction, boost our commitment and make proper planning. some organizations may have similar aims and objectives with ours. they may have better knowledge and long-time experience in the area we ventured in to. their knowledge and experience when shared will be of great benefit to us. our institutions are embodiment of knowledge, collaboration with them is necessary. they are to set the ball running by training our trainers on how best they can handle and manage people, resources and the strategy put in place. collaboration with these stakeholders can help us bridge any possible gab in expertise and knowledge and it will provide potential for more resources, provide moral support and new perspective.
Target outcomes: the outcomes we hope to achieve and how we will measure results. what key indicators we will use to evaluate success.
in our first year of operation with available and functional resources in terms of money, personnel and facility, weegci targeted sixty number of widows/divorcees and they received trainings in various skills. start-up capital and working tools were given to them to start up business in the areas they were trained. every month, five of the trainees were graduated and set up, making sixty at the end of the year. in the subsequent year, the number doubled looking at our plan of increased resources through regular donations by the officials of the organization and individuals within and outside our community. eighty four girls were trained and counseled in the first year. performance monitoring and evaluation was conducted to ensure that the beneficiaries are doing well in the areas of their skills. weegci collaborated and negotiated with some of the retail stores and business individuals in gezawa and the city of kano for our trained members to be supplying their products to them. weegci monitored the supply and sales from these retail stores and individuals to see how well our trained members are doing and how well their products are accepted by the consumers.
